how to rip vocals from a song

Since people have asked, I finally got around to making this tutorial. It's pretty simple so I hope it will prove helpful.

Taking vocals from a song.
The program I use to strip vocals is called Utagoe. -->download here<--

Here's what it looks like. Don't worry about the question marks - I'll explain all that.

To use this program your song must meet two conditions:
1) The song must have a karaoke/instrumental version (so you'll be working with 2 tracks)
2) Both must be in wav format.
So basically you're working with singles/a cappella tracks. It's limiting and it sucks, but I haven't found another way.

You'll notice 3 fields.
In the 1st goes the actual song.
The 2nd, the instrumental.
The 3rd, you write in what you're going to call the vocal-only track.
I've used Kibou Yell as an example.

And as shown here, the big button is Start.

Under start there's another button with tools on it. Click and you'll get this.

Since I have idea what it all means I don't mess with anything but the number on the right. I believe it controls how much noise is taken from the song. Some songs are more troublesome so you might need a higher setting. I dunno... I use 1.2 for the most part. I've tried higher but, honestly, I didn't hear much difference.

Unfortunately, they won't all come out perfect. There have been times I've wanted to work with a song but couldn't because the vocals weren't clean enough for my liking. A little noise can be covered up, but if there's too much music behind the vocals I won't use the song. But perhaps if you're creative enough you can find ways to work around that. I guess I like making things easier for myself. ^^;

Once you've done all that and gotten a vocal rip you are satisfied with, you're ready to make your mix. :)

I use Audacity, but you use whatever program you want. If you go with Audacity (preferably the beta), my advice is just to mess around with it and see what works. That's what I did. There's no one way to do it. Cut, copy, paste, add effects, up the tempo, slow it down (I find these most important), etc. There are a lot of things to do. It all depends on what you're working with.

I hope all this helps. Good luck! :D

Oh hey, thanks! I've always been really wondering about this. Making instrumentals is cake, but vocal tracks have been a mystery XD

Now I'll have to see if I can mix anything with Perfume~

You're welcome!
I'm curious, what do you do to make instrumentals?

I use Goldwave for all of my mixing, and they have an option on there that lets you remove the vocals from a song, I think it's like a pair of lips with an X over it lol.

They have default settings for it, but they're all really aggressive and leave the instrumental sounding really muddled/metallic. So you just have to toggle around with the settings on there to get a good balance of music and reduced vocals.

There's a long tutorial out there for Audacity somewhere on how to remove vocals on there XD But it's too long and complicated for me, so I prefer the easy click of Goldwave.

what do i put in the last box? i'm trying to rip out summertime vocals but i dunno what to put in the last box. do i put "summertime vocals"? how come yours has all the documents and stuff in it? i'm a noob at these things XD help me!

You click the folder button and it'll probably take you to the same folder you loaded your wav files from, and in there you type whatever file name you want ("summertime vocals" should be fine) and then click Save. You should then see all that file location stuff like in the picture.

I hope this helps. Good luck! :)

WAV Only!?

How the hell am I supposed to find both original WAV files of the karaoke and instrumental versions of "Don't Say Lazy" if EVERY online download of the album has them in MP3!?

Also, does it matter if I tried converting the MP3's to WAV and THEN put them in Utagoe? Or, will the vocal track come out wrong because of that?

Hi!

I believe that I have followed every step correctly but when I clicked "Start", a little box came out that I don't know what language it's talking about...
